Franco File Friday: Pierre Hermé

Pierre Hermé Macarons

Just teasing! No, the macaron master Pierre Hermé is not in the Franco File Friday spotlight today (though how fantastic would that be?) but I knew it would steal your attention. Another francophile will make an appearance in the series next week but until then, I thought I’d share my indulgence of choice in honor of spring’s sweet arrival.

{Indulgence + Solidarity}

For the 7th consecutive year, the first day of spring was celebrated in Paris with a macaron tasting in select pastry shops around the city. A complimentary macaron was offered in exchange for a small donation to support the foundation Autistes Sans Frontières (autism without borders). A positive initiative that doubles as a brilliant marketing strategy.

Last year, Pierre Hermé doled out three macarons for the cause but dropped down to one which meant when I finally approached the counter to select my flavor, I caved. I came on a solo mission and left with a small family. The impatient sales girl whipped out a large, cellophane sachet and dangled it above the rainbow colored cookies, seemingly hinting that I’d be doing myself a disservice by opting for only one. After all, there was ample space in the sachet and realistically, how could I narrow my selection to just one flavor when there were so many I was eager to try?

I reasoned that given my usual indifference to these treats, it would behoove me to try additional flavors just to, you know, make sure I hadn’t somehow missed the flavor combination that would turn me into a believer. My problem with macarons reflects an even broader issue I have with bite-sized desserts – they evoke a chorus of  “cute” and “adorable” and inevitably leave me craving more. One bouchée activates the senses but a handful is required to really feel sated.

Leaving the foreign crowd agape before the vibrant display, I headed straight to a café to meet a friend who I enlisted to help judge my selection: the Ispahan (rose, litchi and raspberry), the Mutine (milk chocolate and coconut), the Pietra (crunchy hazelnut praline) and the Mahogany (salted caramel, coconut and mango compôte). To my surprise, I loved every nibble of the Mutine and Pietra but determined the Ispahan flavor combo is better in croissant form.
Four macarons later, the verdict is still out, having yet to find the flavor that makes me grasp the frenzy surrounding these miniature treats. There’s always next year.
